BBC Worldwide and Flextech have signed an agreement to develop a number of subscription channels for the UK broadcast market.
Final details are expected to be announced by the end of the year, but the first channels may launch as early as summer 1997. They will cover major genres such as documentaries, natural history, drama, comedy, lifestyle, arts, music and learning.
A parallel agreement has also been reached between Discovery and BBC Worldwide which will develop channels for the US and other overseas markets.
The signing of this agreement comes after much speculation about who the BBC would join in order to advance its digital TV plans *BBC Restructure to Address the Digital Age. While the Flextech deal snubs BSkyB in terms of programme development, the satellite broadcaster will be a favourite contender to distribute the new channels when they launch.
