BBC Standards Debate
The IPA backed a debate in the House of Commons this week, to discuss whether the BBC continues to set the broadcasting standard.
The result was ‘no’ by a third majority (85-52), with Classic FM’s programme controller, Michael Bukht, claiming that commercial radio now sets the pace in innovative ideas. IPA director general, Nick Phillips recommends that the BBC should set itself new criteria for programme selection.
“We are interested in producing a diverse range of programmes for our viewers” BBC2 controller Michael Jackson says in defence; “not viewers for advertisers. We have always set the standards for others to follow”.
