BBC World Service Joins RAJAR

The BBC World Service has joined the RAJAR survey, following in the footsteps of national digital stations Kerrang!, Oneword and Smash Hits, which came on board in January.

The BBC World Service, a global symbol of public broadcasting in the UK through its 70 years of broadcasting, is transmitted internationally in 43 different languages.

Alan Booth, controller of marketing, commented: “Until recently it’s been easier to join the 150 million BBC World Service global listeners in Damascus, Dhaka or Delhi than in Donegal, Doncaster or Dundee. But with many new ways to listen and a growing appetite for an international news perspective, we believe this will give us an accurate picture of whether the people who fund us, taxpayers in the UK, are able to benefit from and enjoy the service.”

Audience figures for Kerrang!, Oneworld and Smash Hits will be included in the radio audience figures for Quarter One 2003.

Jane O’Hara, managing director of RAJAR, commented: “RAJAR continues to move forward in terms of adding new stations to the survey; reporting on digital only listening; and investigating new methods of accessing UK radio listening habits. Access to digital only stations whether via the TV, Internet or digital receiver has greatly increased over the past year or so.”

The number of radio services now on the RAJAR survey stands at over 270 including 12 national stations and over 260 regional and local stations.

Last month, RAJAR moved to defended its diary system of radio audience measurement, following news that Kelvin MacKenzie’s Wireless Group has commissioned a rival three-year survey using electronic measurement devices (see RAJAR Defends Diary System In Light Of Rival Research).
