The BBC is supporting the launch of its new digital, youth entertainment channel, BBC3, with programming from terrestrial channels, BBC1 and BBC2.
The initial launch fortnight of the new channel will see it premier episodes of primetime BBC1 soap, EastEnders, in an attempt to encourage young people to tune in. BBC2 will also promote take-up of the new youth channel by simultaneously screening its opening night on 9 February.
For the first three weeks after its launch BBC1 will also showcase the best of BBC3 programming, late night, on selected evenings.
Commenting on the initiative, the BBC’s director of television, Jana Bennett, said: “The BBC is committed to driving digital take up and that is why I am happy to bring the strength of BBC1 and BBC2 to help show viewers what else is on offer from the BBC with the launch of our brand new digital channel, BBC3.”
She added: “We are adding extra value by giving digital viewers the chance to see EastEnders a little earlier for a limited time, and we are giving all television viewers the chance to sample the launch night of BBC3 on BBC2.”
BBC3 was finally given the go ahead last September after a series and delays and setbacks (see
Following its launch, BBC3 will be committed to provide 15 hours of science, religion, ethics and business per year, as well as a dedicated 15 minute news programme each weekday and hourly bulletins until midnight. The channel is also required to ensure that 80% of its programming is specially commissioned and that 90% is made in the UK or Europe.
Figures released earlier this month show that BBC1 extended its annual ratings lead over ITV1, with the success of the World Cup, extra investment in drama and more landmark factual programmes helping the channel to increase its share of viewing during 2002 (see BBC1 Extends Annual Ratings Lead Over ITV1).
