![]()
The Big Brother final shows helped Channel 4 to its highest ever daily share- 22.6%, beating BBC1’s 21.1% and ITV’s 20.2% for the first time ever.
Unofficial overnights suggest that an average of 8.3 million, or a 38.6% share, watched the 8.30pm show, peaking at 9.4 million, a share of 42.2%. The later show, at 10pm, gained an average 9.4 million viewers, or 49% share, and peaked at 9.9 million, or a 58.9% share. This makes it the highest rated show on Channel 4 so far this year, and the 5th highest rated show in Channel 4’s history.
The viewing figures for this year’s final beat last year, when that average was 8 million, peaking at 8.8 million. The first series final also attracted 9.4 million, peaking at 10.5 million, but with figures for those who recorded this year’s finals to watch later yet to be taken into account, Channel 4 is expecting consolidated figures to break the 10 million mark.
Before this year’s series began, there were voices of dissent claiming that it would not be possible to generate the same level of public interest for a third year running. However, whether it was the choice of housemates or the multi-platform coverage including text messaging, screens in public places, internet and live streaming on E4, this year’s average audience for the series of 5.7 million or 28% share was up 25% on the series average for last year. The number of 16-34 year olds watching this series was up 7% year on year and the number of ABC1s up 25%.
