John Birt, director general of the BBC, speaking last night at a launch to celebrate the BBC education department’s 70th anniversary, said that the BBC must argue for an increase in the licence fee, if they are to maintain the quality of programming.
The government is considering a report it commissioned from Touche Ross, the results of which should be published in October or November. (Newsline 20/8)
