Bristol Press Increases Profit To £14 Million

Bristol United Press (BUP), publisher of Bristol Evening Post, has released its results for the year ended 31 March 1999. The group reported a 26% increase in operating profit to £14.3 million (1998: £11.3 million), and pre-tax profit was up by 16.2% to £16.8 million.

BUP underwent some reshaping last year, when it disposed of its retail operations, and also acquired Wessex Newspapers at the end of 1997 (see Newsline).

James Evans, chairman of the company, expects to see further growth over the next year and commented: “We have a very strong balance sheet, a resourceful and resilient management and are well placed to deal with any downturns in trading conditions.” The group is intending to further its online interests and non-newspaper publications in the coming year.
