British Companies Will Lose Website Opportunity, Report Predicts

A survey conducted by the Internet Marketing and Development Agency says that British companies face exclusion from global commerce on the internet because they have lost the opportunity to use their desired domain name.

Findings from the survey show that hundreds of thousands of trading names have been bought by rogue internet companies who are seeking to sell them back at inflated costs. It is now predicted that at least a quarter of British companies will no longer be able to compete in the digital media.

The report suggests that most British businesses had been “so lax in their understanding of the World Wide Web” that they had ignored the opportunity offered for a position on the internet by neglecting to register their company name for domain name registration.

Registration can be as little as £60 but many domain names are now changing hands for thousands of pounds.

Commenting on the findings, William Poel, of IMDA says: “It is vital for any business seeking to trade on the internet to be represented with their own name. Our findings show that this is probably the last opportunity companies will have to buy their name.”
