Brixton Finishing School founder: Hire for potential, not for type

Ally Owen, the founder of Brixton Finishing School, believes the industry must stop recruiting for type and, instead, recruit for potential and break out of its traditional “narrow field of vision” when it comes to talent.

She spoke to The Media Leader’s Maria Iu alongside Troy Matthias-Talbot, an alumnus of Brixton Finishing School.

Matthias-Talbot agreed that companies should not have a “stereotypical marketing professional” in mind, asking: “Why don’t we start looking in more areas that we haven’t actually previously considered?”

The pair also discussed other challenges facing talent in 2024, including the cost-of-living crisis and a lack of awareness of what the industry is among underserved communities.

Matthias-Talbot went on to suggest that young people also need better education on how to present themselves to employers. Using a student analogy, she said: “You need to show the examiner what you know.”

Owen is a judge for the 2024 Future 100 Club, The Media Leader’s annual initiative that aims to better support and educate future leaders of the industry. You have until 5 September to nominate a future leader of the industry.

Recorded at The Future of Brands in April.
