Broadcasters Join Forces To Push Free-To-Air Digital

The BBC, Channel 4 and Channel 5 have joined forces to provide greater access to their free-to-air digital television services. Customers who do not wish to subscribe to pay-TV will be able to view the channels free-of-charge.

The digital services provided by these broadcasters are already free-to-view but only available as part of subscription packages. Viewers who only want to see free-to-view digital satellite channels will be able to request a viewing card which allows them access to just these services. A single customer service point will unite the channels and simplify the process for the consumer. Other broadcasters with similar services will be invited to join in the future.

Commenting on the news BBC director of corporate affairs Colin Browne said: “Research shows that strong free-to-view services are vital to the success of digital television. This one-stop shop for viewing card registration and requests will provide a valuable service for our licence-payer and improve access to our public service channels. This is an example of how the free-to-view broadcasters can work together to improve the overall service to digital satellite viewers and accelerate access to digital technology.”
