Broadcasters May Develop Digital Decoder

According to an article in today’s Financial Times, the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV have started discussions on the possibility of developing their own encryption system to decode digital television transmissions.

Satellite channels are expected to be the first to go digital, followed by the terrestrial channels from late 1997. British Sky Broadcasting has invested heavily to create sophisticated descrambling and subscription management facilities. One option for terrestrial broadcasters would be to buy the encryption system developed by BSkyB, but other methods are being explored to prevent just one company dominating the access to digital television.
