Brookside Magazine – Launch

C4’s spin-off magazine, Brookside, launches today. With a cover price of £1.95 and an initial print run of 180,000, the first issue has 68 pages. The next issue is due out in March; it may go either bi-monthly or monthly after that.

Editorially the magazine contains issues covered in Brookside as well as the actors or the plot. There are some serious features in the first issue on lesbianism, TV violence, juvenile crime and drugs. The magazine seems a strange mix, but as Phil Redmond, Brookside’s creator says in an editorial letter, “It’s been a difficult job to get the mix absolutely right, because the Brookside audience is so diverse.” The serious in-depth articles are mixed with lighter fashion photo-spreads of the Brookside actors, and gossip about the show’s plots and stars.

Also besides the usual plot information, there are behind the scenes looks at how the series is run, in this issue covering scripts.

Big brand advertisers include So…? perfume, Freemans, Easy Jeans, Always and Syndol. The ad:ed ratio is 16:84.
