Brûlé Gives Bibles Of Cool Cold Shoulder
![]()
Tyler Brûlé has stepped down from his position as editorial director of elite interiors and lifestyle magazines Wallpaper* and Spruce. IPC Media has announced that Christina Ferrari, founder and managing editor of Time Inc.’s US title Teen People has been appointed as acting editorial director.
Brûlé launched Wallpaper*, which now sells editions in over 50 countries worldwide, in 1996. He sold it to Time Inc a year later. Following the IPC/Time Warner takeover (see AOL Buys IPC Media For £1.15bn), the title was brought under the IPC Ignite umbrella, meaning Brûlé had to report to Ignite managing director Mike Soutar and rumours of infighting have followed ever since. In March this year it was announced that both Wallpaper* and Spruce would have a new publishing director, in the form of IPC’s Richard Johnstone, formerly of Loaded and Ministry.
Although Wallpaper* has a relatively small circulation- around 130,000 worldwide, of which 40-45,000 is UK sales, according to ABC- it has gained respect in the industry for being an achingly cool bible of modern upmarket style, targeting advertiser-friendly young ABC1s. It is said that Brûlé will now focus on the development of Wink, the creative consultancy he launched in 1998.
