BSC Upholds Complaints Against Pot Noodle “Slag” Ad

The Broadcasting Standards Commission (BSC) has joined the ITC and the ASA in upholding complaints against Pot Noodle’s “slag of all snacks” ad.

The Commission received 28 complaints about the high-profile TV ad, which featured a man, tired of his wife’s sandwiches, looking to “indulge” himself with a Pot Noodle.

The majority of the complainants objected to the inclusion of the word “slag”, which they considered to be derogatory to women. There was also concern that the ad, which contained sexual overtones, was unsuitable on the grounds that it might be seen by children.

The broadcasters pointed out that the ad was approved with a post-watershed timing restriction due to its adult nature. However, the BSC considered research which suggests that the majority of viewers believe there should be no swearing or offensive language in ads shown either before or after 9pm.

The Commission considered the word slag to be offensive and concluded that it was not acceptable for use in a TV commercial. The complaints were upheld.

In a separate move the BSC dismissed complaints against a TV ad for Carling, which was recently deemed inappropriate by the ITC on the grounds that it featured a man licking a toilet bowl (see ITC Upholds Complaints Against Carling TV Ad).

“the advert was quite objectionable to say I did see the advert a few times and found it was
on even at 3.30 pm and later at 7pm that it was not the right fit for those times of the day
and many youngsters must have even seen the advert on the likes of MTV and etc where
there was no control about programming content and what time should explicit language
be on and I did find that the poster campaigns was distasteful with the slogan hurt me you
slag but using an food product like pot noodle in a provocative manor should not be used
ever it was sexploitation at it's worse now there's another offensive word that has appeared
the word slut in a form of a male domination hypnosis video in which it depraves males minds
with a seductive voiceover in the video satin slut instructing male dominants to write the word i'm a slut along
with an sensual arousing fabric in the comments section on the site YouTube but nobody has yet complained about the video's sexual overtones that's in a string of male domination video's on the site but as for pot noodle slag of all snacks has become wildly popular on the internet .
