BSkyB Assures DTI Over Man Utd Bid
It is understood that BSkyB has written to Stephen Byers, the trade and industry secretary, offering further assurances that its planned takeover of Manchester United will not unfairly influence future negotiations for Premiership broadcasting rights.
According to today’s Financial Times, BSkyB has offered to remove Manchester Utd from the Premier League’s meetings with TV groups negotiating for the rights to broadcast games. The idea is that this would prevent Sky from gaining confidential information on the proposals of its broadcasting rivals.
Stephen Byers is to deliver his decision on the £623 million takeover on or before 13 April. The Monopolies & Mergers Commission handed over its recommendations to the DTI over three weeks ago (see MMC Submits Report On BSkyB Man Utd Bid To DTI).
