BSkyB’s takeover bid for Manchester United Football Club (see Newsline) has been referred to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC) by Peter Mandelson, trade and industry secretary. Although Mandelson voiced approval for the bid late last week (see Newsline), his recommendation was acting on the advice of the director general of fair trading, who was concerned for the wider issues of public interest related to the proposed deal.
The MMC will report its findings next March.
BSkyB announces its financial results tomorrow at its annual general meeting; details will be available on Newsline during the day.
