BSkyB Could Slow Down Digital Development

According to an article in today’s Independent, BSkyB may be considering slowing down its plans for a digital TV launch.

There would be three main reasons for the move: it would be an attempt by BSkyB to protect its current TV service which is very lucrative; it is waiting for the response of its competitors to the Government’s digital TV licence plans to be outlined in the Broadcasting Bill; and analysts believe that BSkyB is waiting to see if digital TV will actually work before launching a service.

At the moment BSkyB plans to launch digital TV alongside its current analogue system and the company recently announced it had secured new satellite capacity to support the launch of up to 500 new digital channels (Newsline 07/05).
