BSkyB Denies Rekindling Of Talks With Canal Plus
BSkyB has denied reports that it is re-entering discussions with French broadcaster Canal Plus about a possible joint alliance. Sky’s statement follows speculation in the Observer last weekend that discussions were to recommence.
Talks between the two broadcasters began in February when possible joint ventures were discussed (see Newsline), but broke down in March after Canal Plus insisted that it have a dominant position over the pay-TV alliance (see Newsline).
Reports circulating at the weekend suggested that the departure of chief executive Mark Booth from BSkyB (see Newsline) may have opened the way for a possible merger of business. However, BSkyB has denied the reports, saying that there is no basis for the story and that the talks are not being reopened.
