BSkyB Escapes Monopoly Investigation

The Office of Fair Trading has indicated that though BSkyB is not operating as a monopoly competitiveness in the pay TV market is being obstructed.

John Bridgeman, director general of fair trading , said: “BSkyB’s acquisition of premium programming has created a barrier to entry into the market which is already limited by the restricted capacity of the ASTRA satellite system. The company also has a large share of the available UK-dedicated ASTRA transponders”.

BSkyB has agreed to modify agreements given last March which will allow a more open and competitive UK wholesale pay TV market.
