BSkyB May Save Euro Cup
Rugby Union may receive a change in fortune with speculation that BSkyB are planning to invest £140m for the Heineken European Cup. Although BSkyB were unwilling to comment, the investment could change the look of the tournament which was dropped by ITV last week *(ITV Abandons Euro Rugby Cup). ITV covered the first year of the European Cup for £5m.
Earlier this year England were thrown out of the Five Nations Championship *(Rugby Challenges BSkyB Deal) due to disagreements with the other countries regarding a deal between England and BSkyB. Although England were accepted back into the Championship *(England Return To Five Nations), the other nations, which are France, Wales, Ireland and Scotland, could not change the £87.5m BSkyB/England deal.
There is also speculation that BSkyB could draw up individual deals with the Welsh, Irish and Scottish Unions for rights to screen international matches.
