BSkyB Profits Double
New subscribers have helped BSkyB more than double its profits in the 3-months to September 1995. Pre-tax profits increased by 108% on the same period last year, to £51m. Subscriptions accounted for 85% of total revenues, with 74% coming from DTH and 11% coming from cable. DTH subscription revenues grew by 35% and cable by 56%, compared to the same quarter last year. Advertising revenues increased by 17% and accounted for 10% of total revenues.
BSkyB gained 214,000 new subscribers during the quarter, taking the total number of paying subscribers to 4.38m. The growth is partly attributed to the launch of the Disney Channel and the coverage of several major sporting events including the Ryder Cup and world title boxing fights.
The group is refusing to comment on reports that it is about to finalise a deal giving it the right to broadcast the major rugby union competitions, including the Five Nations Championship.
