BSkyB Research Shows Importance Of Children In Multi-Channel Homes
BSkyB has responded to a study of its subscriber base by launching a number of new services for children. Its research has highlighted the importance of children in multichannel programming and revealed that 62% of Sky Digital households contain children, a figure which is above the national average of 54%.
Included in the launch is Nick Jnr, Britain’s first channel tailored entirely for pre-schoolers. Half of its line-up will be British programming. This age group will also be catered for on the Disney Channel which is introducing a daily pre-school strand called Playhouse, available from 9am – 2pm and carrying new educational and entertaining shows.
For digital only subscribers, Fox Kids and Nickelodeon are extending their broadcasting hours so that both are now available from 6am to 10pm. Extra services, Nickelodeon Replay, Fox Kids Plus and Cartoon Network Plus will show the main action on these channels an hour later. With Trouble and the Cartoon Network also available there is now a total of nine services for children.
A spokesman for the company put Sky ahead of its competitors in provision for children: “Add them all together and Sky’s range of nine kids’ channels is the widest available on any digital or multichannel television platform.”
