BSkyB Strengthens Online Interests

BSkyB has expanded its online division with the appointment of two new senior executives. Meirion Alcock will join the group as head of retail commerce and Simon Green has been named as general manager for Sky Sports Online.

Alcock joins the group from Flextech and will be responsible for developing a uniform strategy for e-commerce within the company’s new media business and seeking out e-commerce opportunities to complement Sky’s broadcasting business. Simon Green will look after content and create new revenue streams for Sky Sports’ online business.

The group also announced the purchase of internet address Sky.com. The company bought the URL from Sky Computers of Massachusetts for an undisclosed amount. It will allow all existing URLs owned by the group, such as sky.co.uk, to now default to Sky.com. Announcing the move, Sky’s director of new media, John Swingewood, said: “The purchase enhances Sky’s brand position in the online world because it allows more consistency in the promotion of the company’s internet properties.”
