BSkyB To Be Europe’s Top Revenue Earner By 2003
BSkyB is set to become Europe’s top TV revenue earner by the year 2003, according to a report from Kagan World Media. BSkyB is forecast to earn $4 billion, an increase of 252% from 1994. Currently in 1994 German broadcaster ARD, is top with TV revenues of £2.5 billion.
ITV is, however, the top advertising earner, with $2.3 billion in 1994, and is expected to remain in first place until 2003, when its ad revenues will reach £3.9 billion.
TV revenues for Western Europe are expected to reach £27.8 billion in 1994, an 8.2% increase on 1993’s total. By 2003, the market is forecast to be worth $48.2 billion. Advertising is expected to retain its 60% share, but licence fee income is anticipated to fall from 31.8% of the 1993 total to 23.3% by 2003. Pay TV subscriptions offer the most growth for the European TV industry during the next decade; subscriptions for the top five services represented 8.5% of the 1993 total, but are forecast to take 16.1% by 2003; $7.9 billion.
European net TV advertising reached £15.3 billion in 1993, and is expected to rise 5.6% in 1994 to $16.2 billion. The top five countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK), will take 84% of the 1994 total.
