BSkyB To Bring Personal TV Viewing To The UK

BSkyB has teamed up with US electronic company TiVo, whose products allow viewers to personalise their television viewing. Personal video recorders will be launched in the UK later this year.

The machine has a hard disk which can store up to 30 hours of programmes and can be instructed to record an evening’s programmes. The viewer can teach it their personal preferences and it will automatically search the schedules and record favourite shows at any time.

The recorders give the viewer control over their viewing, allowing them to watch and record programmes whenever they are on. The main contention with such devices is their ability to allow customers skip advertisements. They also make it harder for TV companies to measure audiences as a particular show may be recorded and viewed at any time.

Tony Ball. chief executive of Sky said: “Sky and TiVo’s new personal television service with the personal video recorder will dramatically enhance the TV viewing experience for all consumers in the UK. Our exclusive alliance with TiVo is a natural fit for Sky.”

It is believed the deal will allow TiVo to offer its service to BSkyB subscribers.
