BSkyB Unveils Autumn Schedule

Sky Television today announced details of its £130 million programming package for the Autumn, boasting several new channels and a range of new shows.

The choice of entertainment will supposedly be broadened on Sky 1 and its new sister channel Sky 2 with the inclusion of Xena: Warrior Princess, Nash Bridges, High Incident, The Lazarus Man and the New Adventures of Superman. New episodes of “favourite shows” such as The Simpsons, and Beverly Hills 90210 will also feature alongside a new home-produced soap opera set on Merseyside, entitled Springhill. October not only sees the launch of this soap, but also the start of 1 to 3, a new daytime show with Paul Ross and Sarah Greene.

Sport continues to feature heavily in the new season, with Sky proposing to broadcast over 270 hours of coverage every week. The three sports channels will continue offering live coverage of the major football competitions in England and Scotland, England’s World Cup Qualifying campaign and international cricket as England travel to Zimbabwe and New Zealand.

Sky’s three movie channels will offer television premieres of recent cinema hits, including Dumb and Dumber, Muriel’s Wedding, Disclosure, Little Women, The River Wild, and Legends of the Fall.

Also a number of new channels will join Sky’s Multi-Channels. Seven new channels from Granada Sky Broadcasting will launch in October, followed by the Weather Channel, WBTV – the Warner Channel, the Fox Kids Network, and the Computer Channel (see today’s Newsline).

Head of Programming, David Elstein remains positive when considering the prospects for the coming season : “This is the richest ever Sky, with new channels and fresh programmes. The satellite revolution has stormed new heights this year with over 5.5 million homes now receiving Sky’s programmes. Never has the satellite proposition looked stronger or autumn viewing more attractive.”
