BT and MSN Announce Marketing Partnership

BT has announced a partnership with MSN, which will see the two groups co-market internet access via BT broadband and Microsoft’s new internet service MSN 8.
The deal makes BT Microsoft’s first major European distributor for MSN 8, the new multimedia email product, which has been developed to challenge AOL’s dominance in the market. MSN 8 features child safety controls, anti-spam filters, more personalised browser software and enriched email.
The joint marketing of BT Broadband and MSN 8 will be supported by a $4 million joint marketing campaign. The new initiative is part of a strategic alliance agreement signed by BT Group CEO Ben Verwaayen and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer earlier this month.
Verwaayen commented: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Microsoft to provide access to the wide ranging services offered by MSN 8. Broadband is at the key to future growth of the company and is the heart of our strategy.”
BT’s broadband business has been hitting the headlines after Freeserve successfully appealed to the Competition Commission, after Oftel rejected its complaint that BT was using its dominant position in the telecoms market to gain an unfair advantage over rival ISPs (see BT Broadband Faces Competition Commission Inquiry).
