BT Considers Options

BT is still considering its next move following WorldCom’s surprise bid for MCI earlier this week. WorldCom’s offer, which threatens to scupper the BT/MCI merger plans, is thought to be in the region of $30m which is around $9m more than BT’s.

BT’s move on MCI, which was first announced in November last year (subscribers see BT Merger Creates Murdoch Alliance), was also under threat earlier this year when BT wanted to renegotiate the price it was paying. The deal appeared safe however after MCI agreed a 20% cut in its own price (subscribers see BT Renegotiates MCI Takeover). It is reported that BT remains confident that the merger will still go ahead.
