BT Extends Broadband Package With Philips Link-Up

BT has teamed with Philips to launch of a new broadband-enabled music service that will allow consumers to listen to downloaded music anywhere in their home.

The special package combines the Philips Streamium MC-i250 stereo system with the BT Voyager 2000 wireless modem. It uses a broadband connection to stream MP3 files and online radio stations wirelessly to any room in the user’s house.

The new product is set to be the first of many broadband-enabled consumer packages designed to encourage take up of the new technology. The partnership marks the next stage of BT’s ‘Home of Possibilities’ strategy to extend broadband throughout the home.

Commenting on the initiative, Pierre Danon, chief executive officer of BT Retail, said: “BT has a vision where broadband creates more possibilities in the home. The Streamium bundle does just that allowing customers to enjoy their music wherever they want.”

The launch of the Streamium bundle follows the recent announcement of BT’s intention to bring broadband internet access to the whole of the UK by 2005 and its call for Government and the industry to work together to make Broadband Britain a reality (see BT Calls On Government To Back New Broadband Target).

However, new research has revealed that broadband growth would be boosted if the current regulation was changed to encourage more competition by breaking BT’s monopoly of the market. The newly created Broadband Industry Group claims that only greater competition can ensure the potential of broadband (see BT Monopoly Blamed For Hampering Broadband Growth).
