BT Responds To Internet Pricing War

In response to the announcements made this week by AltaVista and NTL, BT has this morning unveiled a new pricing structure for its customers to access the internet.

BT has developed a new package called SurfTime which offers users unlimited evening and weekend Net access for a subscription fee of £5.99 per month, on top of the £9.26 per month line rental. Customers also receive up to 80 minutes of inclusive free voice calls. Daytime internet calls are still charged at 1p per minute. For users wishing to have 24 hour unmetered access, the cost of BT rises to £29.25 per month for residential customers.

This compares to cable company NTL’s offer of £9.25 per month for completely unmetered access for those in NTL areas, or a £10 one-off adapter charge plus a minimum £10 per month on voice calls for those in non-NTL regions (see NTL Returns Fire As Internet Access War Heats Up). AltaVista has not yet confirmed its price structure, but it is expected that there will be a one-off registration fee of between £30 and £50 and then an annual subscription charge of £10-20 (see AltaVista To Offer Unmetered Net Access). For this users get complete, 24 hour unmetered access.

BT SurfTime launches on 1 June.
