BT To Launch First Global Internet Network
BT and its US partner MCI have announced the world’s first high-speed, high-reliability global Internet “backbone” network.
The new service, called Concert InternetPlus, will combine the substantial existing Internet networks of the two companies into eight new regional Internet “superhubs”. It is planned that these will expand within a year to a total of 20 hubs in key locations around the world. The initial regional superhubs will be located in Australia, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, the UK and the US whilst there are plans for two more throughout Asia and the Americas.
The services will provide an array of Internet and “intranet” transport, dedicated and dial-up access and value-added services available from more than 1200 locations in 70 countries. It will also include the first-ever global Internet service performance guarantees, improved response times and greater availability.
Concert InternetPlus is expected to increase the overall international capacity of today’s Internet by 30 %.
