BT Video On Demand Plans Boosted
BT’s plans to supply video on demand via its existing telephone network were given a boost yesterday when the technology minister Patrick McLoughlin told cable industry representatives that he could not prevent the service. (Newsline 30/9) Speaking at the cable conference in London the minister said there was nothing he could do to stop BT exploiting new technology. When the government regulations were made a suitable quality signal could not be delivered by BT’s copper wire system, but new technology had solved the problem. BT plans to launch the service within two years and potential revenue has been estimated at £2bn by the year 2000.
