BT Video-On-Demand To Go Ahead

The British Telecommunications board has given the go-ahead for a trial of its video-on-demand television service. Around 2,500 homes in the Colchester area will be chosen for the trial which will get under way next year. If the initial trial is successful then a much larger trial involving 250,000 homes will follow.

BT engineers are confident that 90% of the 23m homes connected to its network would be able to recieve the digitally compressed pictures.

Speaking at the MRG conference earlier this month Johnathan Shier suggested that the cable and satelliteindustry would be most affected if video on demand television takes off. However, writing in today’s FT Raymond Snoddy suggests video stores would be most affected and cable and satellite to a lesser extent.
