C5 And DTI Reach Agreement
The Department of Trade and Industry has agreed to a Channel 5 transmission request which will mean an extra 4 million people will be able to receive the new channel.
Channel 5 will now be able to use a redundant transmission channel, channel 35, on which to broadcast to those homes which otherwise would receive interference to their signal. While this is obviously good news for the channel, it does mean an extra 1.8 million video recorders will have to be retuned. Speculation is already suggesting that the channel’s launch may be delayed by about a month, though Channel 5 Broadcasting is denying this.
A spokesman from C5B also confirmed that it was definitely in talks with BSkyB and a number of cable companies regarding various possible partnerships: these include programming collaborations and carriage of C5 services. C5 maintained that no details had been finalised and would not be drawn on the possible financial consequences of a transmission deal with BSkyB (see yesterday’s Newsline).
