C5 Hits Viewing Target
C5 is achieving a viewing share of 5.5% in homes which can receive the new channel, ahead of the predicted 5%, according to BARB data released by the broadcaster. Overall, C5 averaged a 3.1% share. Despite ITV’s share of viewing falling, commercial TV’s share actually increased from 55.8% in 1996 to 58% in 1997.
In terms of audience profiles, C5 says that 47% of its viewers are male (compared to 39% for ITV and 44% for C4) while 47% are 16-44 years old (more than any other terrestrial channel). 12% of C5’s viewers are 16-34 year old ABC1 adults compared with ITV’s 9%.
Overall, 21.3 million viewers are tuning into C5 each week. The channel also says that it successfully met all of its business targets for 1997.
