Channel 5 Broadcasting confirmed to MediaTel today that the channel will definitely not be launching on New Year’s Day.
C5 say that this is because of the Government’s announcement this week *C5 And DTI Reach Agreement which means an extra 1.8 million homes will be able to receive the new terrestrial channel. While C5 had always pushed for channel 35 to be used to transmit to extra viewers, its retuning schedule had not catered for the extra work this would create.
The launch will now be put back by around six weeks, with broadcasting beginning in February. The cost of retuning will also rise by around £20m to £120m.
