Cable Companies In Merger Talk
Speculation is growing that a merger is set to take place between Cable & Wireless Communications and Telewest. If this goes ahead it would create a huge cable company which would probably need the approval of both the Office of Fair Trading and Oftel before it could begin trading.
CWC was formed only two months ago by what was regarded then as a mammoth merger, with C&W’s Mercury Communications, Nynex, Bell Cablemedia and Videotron all joining forces (subscribers see Cable Companies Merge).
Both companies have benefited from these rumours, with CWC rising 18p to 577p and Telewest increasing 2.5p to 96.5p this morning.
