Cable Companies Set Up Rival Digital Service
It is reported that UK cable companies are in the process of developing a standard digital set-top box for viewers wishing to receive digital television. With the aim of beating BSkyB to the launch of a digital service, the cable companies have already set up a working group headed by Derek Lewis the chairman of UK Gold.
Among the first priorities of the coalition is reaching an agreement on a standard universal system for the cable industry, which should be reached by Christmas. The cable companies are expected to appoint a supplier in the New Year, with the launch of the digital service happening around the summer of 1997.
