Cable Companies Stiffen DTV Competition
Telewest Communications, together with various cable operators, are launching a common set-top box for digital cable television next year. The move could be a direct assault on BSkyB which is launching its own digital service next year. Earlier this year, cable companies voiced their opinions on BSkyB’s dominance in the market *(BSkyB Escapes Monopoly Investigation) and a letter was issued by Oftel earlier this week asking for their responses on BSkyB’s ratecard and packages *(More Flexibility With BSkyB Packages).
A spokesperson from Telewest said: “We do not see this as an assault on Sky but rather as fair competition in the market.”
The other companies involved are believed to be Nynex CableComms, Bell Cablemedia and General Cable who were all unavailable for comment.
