Cable Companies To Invest In Programming
According to Raymond Snoddy writing in today’s Financial Times, the biggest cable companies are considering a significant increase in programming investment. Leading companies, including TeleWest, Nynex and Bell Cablemedia, believe that a wider range of material exclusive to cable may be necessary to increase cable subscription levels.
The cable companies are considering setting up a company to acquire rights to programmes and events; the company would function like the ITV Network Centre, which commissions programmes for the national ITV network. The cable industry, which has recently acquired rights to the Rugby and Cricket World Cups, would like to become less dependent on BSkyB.
