The three largest UK cable operators, Telewest Communications plc, Bell Cablemedia plc (including Videotron Holdings plc) and NYNEX CableComms Group have selected NextLevel Broadband Networks Group, of General Instrument Corporation, as an initial supplier of digital equipment.
The cable companies are discussing with General Instrument how the supply of transmission equipment and set-top boxes will provide an integrated platform for the provision of digital services in cable homes throughout the UK. Additional manufacturers of set-top boxes to be supplied to the cable companies are to be identified later in 1997.
The cable set-top box is expected to be capable of delivering a wide range of interactive products including video-on-demand, Internet and on-line information transaction services.
President and Chief Executive of NYNEX CableComms, John Killian concluded: “The move to digital television is anticipated to herald a new generation of exciting services which we hope will mark the beginning of a lifestyle change for cable customers in the UK. Cable networks are capable of operating advanced digital services and therefore will be able to bring our customers a wider choice and better service.
