Cable Subscribers To Exceed 6m By 2000
Speaking yesterday at the TV Summit, Eugene Connell of Nynex and the Cable Communications Association predicted that by the end of the year there will be 1 million cable subscribers. By 1995 there will be 6.5 million homes passed; this figure will be 14 million by the year 2000. Subscribers should have reached 6.6 million by 2000, with 4.3 million residential cable telephony subscribers by 2000.
The UK has the most advanced infra-structure in the world, and this will help the growth of cable. It is predicted to overtake satellite by the end of the decade. New services will also expand cable: new plans include on-demand entertainment, transactional TV (such as shopping channels), and multi-media services, such as tele-banking and medicine. In the USA a Sega games channel is currently on trial.
