The number of people taking up cable services is continuing to increase. According to the latest Independent Television Commission (ITC) figures, 26.4% of homes passed and marketed now choose to take cable television, while 36.5% take any service, both figures representing a rise compared to last quarter.

There has also been a slight rise in the percentage of all TV homes which are cable television subscribers – from 12.4% in the same quarter last year to 13.6% for the first quarter of this year.

Telewest still has the highest number of homes passed at 4.4m, compared to 4m for CWC and 3.6m for NTL. NTL retains the highest penetration rate at 31.9%, while Telewest’s penetration has reached 25.7% and CWC’s 22.9%. Since the last report of this kind, the CWC/NTL merger has been given government approval (see Government Clears NTL/CWC Merger) and has gone ahead.
