Cable TV Take-Up Rises

Cable TV Take-Up Rises

The first quarter of 1999 has seen the rise in cable TV take-up continue, with 12.4% of all UK homes now receiving their TV through cable, according to the latest report from the Independent Television Commission. This compares to 11.9% in the ITC’s previous report (see Cable Take-Up Continues To Rise).

Of the 12.1 million households which can receive cable services (homes passed), 24.5% have been connected to cable television and 35% take both cable TV and telephone services. The average monthly subscription price for cable TV has fallen year on year, to £23.87 per month, compared with £24.29 last year.

The current UK cable industry stretches across three major players – NTL, Telewest and Cable & Wireless Communications. NTL services over 28% of its 3.5 million passed homes. Telewest, which can reach over 4 million homes, is currently connected to 24% of those and CWC is connected to 842,692 homes, a penetration of 21.2% of its 3.98 million homes passed.
