Cables Crossed With Channel 5
Channel 5 had hoped to increase its penetration by doing distribution deals with cable companies, but this plan has run into trouble.
Undisclosed cable operators are now reported to be demanding free advertising on Channel 5 in return for carriage. Channel 5 is said to find these terms unacceptable.
The negotiations were being carried out centrally by Telewest, but it is now likely that some cable companies will agree terms individually with the channel.
NYNEX CableComms, Britain’s second largest cable company, has already signed a deal with Channel 5 to ensure that 75,000 cable television customers in north-west England will be able to receive the new channel without interference *Tuning Successes For Channel 5.
