Canal Plus And BSkyB Talks Suspended

Talks between the French group Canal Plus and BSkyB about the possibility of an alliance to create a European pay-TV group (see Newsline) have been suspended.

Following disagreements over the arrangement concerning management, where Canal Plus insisted that it have a dominant position in the management of the alliance (see Newsline)other problems have also come to light.

Canal Plus was adamant that it remain a French company, and that its main shareholder – Vivendi, another French group – stay as such. The group also required that the company remained independent, and in strict compliance with the rules of corporate government, and that its commitment to cultural and creative production in France and Europe generally be respected.

The French group commented: “No decision was made concerning these preconditions. As long as they have not been accepted, no other discussion will take place concerning the other parameters of an eventual agreement.”
