Capital Radio Wants A Safer Digital Deal
Capital Radio has told regulators that it will not proceed with plans to begin broadcasting in digital unless it is guaranteed better terms. As the UK’s largest independent radio company Capital is virtually guaranteed a London digital slot but there is still a slim possibility that it may not be granted a frequency. This, according to Capital, is not a satisfactory situation under which to make the £1m a year digital investment which was planned.
Capital is requesting that it is guaranteed a digital slot in London and is also asking the Radio Authority for a local licence to reach the outer suburbs which contain 800,000 listeners and which the London digital frequencies do not reach.
Chief executive of Capital David Mansfield says, “We are not expecting subsidies from the government, but it has to recognise that we can only make the commercial case for switching if there is guaranteed long-term return on capital.”
