Capital Targets Listeners With New Broadband Network
![]()
Capital Radio is aiming to boost its listening figures with the introduction of a new broadband network that will allow it to launch new stations.
The network will enable Capital’s range of existing stations to share live and pre-recorded content in real-time, allowing them to broadcast material, such as celebrity interviews, which they would not normally have access to.
Capital is confident that the initiative, which is being developed by communications solutions group THUS, will help enlarge its listener base. The increased bandwidth provided by the platform will also allow the radio group to launch new sites and channels with greater flexibility.
Capital Radio’s operations director, Paul Davies, said: “The network solution will play a pivotal role in supporting our strategic objectives for the coming years.”
Capital Radio’s flagship Capital 95.8FM has been hit hard by the increasing competition in the London market. The latest RAJAR data for the three months ending in December 2002 shows that the station saw its weekly reach decline by 16.6% year on year to 2,460,000, down from 2,951,000 in the same period the previous year.
However, the radio group was boosted recently with news that lynchpin presenter, Chris Tarrant, does not intend to leave the station before his contract expires in 2004 (see Good News For Capital As Tarrant Plans To Stay).
