Carling To Lead ITV Rugby Team
ITV this afternoon announced that Will Carling will be the anchor-man for its forthcoming rugby union coverage of England’s home internationals. He joins regular commentators John Taylor and Steve Smith.
ITV will be showing recorded coverage of England’s November and December games against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand as well as three of England’s Five Nations matches – against France in Paris and Wales and Ireland at Twickenham – in “high-profile” 4.15pm Saturday slots.
For the first time ITV will also be showing live coverage of the Varsity Match on December 9 as well as exclusive live rights to the England and Scotland World Cup qualifying games in 1998.
ITV director of programmes David Liddiment said that “ITV is the terrestrial channel for sport in the UK and sport is a key part of what ITV is all about.” He went on to point out that top-class rugby union appeals to young upmarket males who are attractive to advertisers.
