Carlton Documentary Found To Be Fake
A Carlton television documentary, The Connection, broadcast in October 1996, has been found to be fake after an inquiry into the programme. The Guardian was the first body to make allegations of forgery concerning the documentary, and these were proved right by the enquiry carried out by Carlton executives. The Panel ruled that “the programme contained serious flaws and should not have been broadcast in the form that it took.”
The Independent Television Commission (ITC) welcomed the enquiry, stating that “the programme, in important respects, is in breach of the ITC’s Programming Code.” The Commission is due to decide the penalty for the programme at its meeting on 17 December. Reports suggest that Carlton could be subject to a fine, or have to make an on-air apology for the programme.
The documentary was awarded 8 national and international television awards, which Carlton Communications claims it is now in the process of sending back.
